Service of Tenebrae

"Tenebrae" is Latin for "shadows." As the candles are extinguished, they symbolize the fading loyalty of the disciples and portray the waning of the light of the world as Jesus was betrayed and crucified. Dating back to the eighth century, the service provides a gripping experience of the darkness of life without Christ and helps us to prepare for the full impact of his resurrection on Easter morning.
